If you thought the Facebook advertising guidelines was hard enough to understand then you will love this infograph to help you understand the Facebook 20% text rule you are supposed to abide by in any Facebook advertised image spaces.

This change has been added to their Facebook Pages Policy and Facebook Advertising Policy and affects the following images:

✧ Promoted Posts – images posted to the wall and then pay Facebook to promote. This also includes sponsored adverts.
✧ Page Post Advert – an image of a product or event you may create to promote on your page but not necessarily pay to promote.
✧ Page Cover Images – this increases the text limitations that can be used in these areas. It’s important to understand completely what text you cannot use in Facebook’s cover images as this is one area I see even the graphics industry mess up for clients!

The general marketing percentage for promoting versus content delivery is 80/20 and I did wonder if this is perhaps why Facebook selected the same ratio for their images… The main reason for bringing in the rule was to reduce the amount of spammy images that were purely text and promotional driven. Personally I like the idea of images being more about the use of design marketing and less about copy writing.

Enjoy looking at the number of options you can consider while abiding to the 20% text rule in the Facebook infograph below, and be sure to share it with others if you think they’re breaking any rules!

An extra handy tool I discovered where you can upload a Facebook cover image to check if it’s compliant is: http://coverphoto.paavo.ch

It’s big marketing results for Valentine’s Day if you are a retailer of fashion, jewellery and flowers. And let’s not also forget about the restaurant and stationary industries! Up to 180 million cards will be exchanged this year all because of the emotional buying tactics businesses use in their Valentine’s Day marketing campaigns. Besides Christmas this is the one day of the year people feel bound to show how much they care for their loved one by showering them with luxury items or something special.

The amount the average consumer spends on their special partner in life is about $116 and if you thought flowers was the no one item of expenditure – think again… it’s candy and chocolates (of course you say!)

I won’t go on with the statistics – you can read this infograph below from Wishpond to absorb all the outstanding facts about Valentine’s Day Marketing. What I want to focus on is giving you some tips to get in on a piece of the action because a lot of these sales are left to the last minute – just like Christmas!

So here’s my tips on how you too can get big marketing results for Valentine’s Day:
❤ TIP 1 ❤ If you have product images use free image stock websites to find hearts and valentine’s templates to place them on, so they are more relevant and eye catching when promoting in Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram. Free stock photo sites come and go so the best way to find them is Google the term.
❤ TIP 2 ❤ If you are a service, offer two for one deals – everyone has to spend the day as a couple doing something. This is great if you are in the pamper industry such as massage parlors or day spas.
❤ TIP 3 ❤ As a restaurant promote a special Valentine’s Day menu or a free bottle of wine or chocolates for Valentine’s bookings. This is a great way to attract your regular clients to dine with you rather than picking ‘somewhere special for a change’.
❤ TIP 4 ❤ Pair products and services together – the ‘he and she towel sets’ is a bit of a cliche but it works. You can’t deny that there hasn’t been a time when you have kept the ‘free bonus gift’ when buying for your friend or partner
❤ TIP 5 ❤ Be clever with competitions – have people share their most romantic story or most embarrassing Valentine’s Day in order to receive a discount – this is a great way to leverage off one marketing campaign to reduce the costs to later campaigns. Capturing a targeted audience’s emails in order to share information (such as Easter promotions) at a later date is still one of the highest conversion methods today. it is also a quick way to increase content and engagement on your blog and social sites.

I would love to hear how you plan to spend on your special one for Valentine’s Day. Do you go all out or is it a quiet affair? Leave your comment below ⇩

I can understand the changes made Facebook image sizes and design space rules slipping under the radar of a small business who isn’t very active in this social network, but there’s no excuse for those who are offering graphic services to use ill fitting Facebook image sizes or put their client’s marketing spaces in danger of being deleted because they are not aware of the most current design space rules. So below I’ve listed the most recent Facebook image sizes and the do’s and don’ts of how you can use them for marketing your business.

The Cover Page & Profile Image Space
The Facebook Cover image is the biggest design area to immediately expose your business to new visitors. The Facebook image sizes for the cover and Profile can be seen below in this diagram:

Facebook automatically adjusts images to fit the area but they do have limitations on the size of the file you upload and this varies. For online social use it is best to reduce the resolution size of your file prior to uploading, and to keep any text used in images sharp, best to save as a PNG file.

All cover images are public, which means anyone can see your cover on your Business & your Profile Page. Covers are to represent you and your business and in general cannot be false, deceptive or misleading in it’s content. Because you are not to represent a business on a profile it is important that your Profile Page image represents the person (and their business role), not the actual business. The Facebook cover image cannot infringe on third parties’ intellectual property such as their trademark’s or logos to give the impression you are associated with them unless permission has been granted. You cannot also encourage or offer incentives to people to upload your cover image designs to their personal timelines as it does not represent you as a person and can be seen as a form of advertising or sponsorship – therefore creating an issue about your profile representing a business presence.

So if you are still with me after reading the general rules, here is a list of more specific rules that cannot be apart of your cover page designs:
✘ No price or purchase offer information, such as % discounts, promo codes.
✘ No Contact info, such as website address, email, mailing address, phone number or other info that can be placed on your ‘About’ section.
✘ No references to Facebook elements, such as Like or Share.
✘ No calls to action, such as “Call now”, “Tell A Friend” or “Enter Here” or pointing arrows
✘ No more than 20% text contribution to the design.

Who out there now can list off a number of business pages who are breaking one or two of these rules? Frightening isn’t it… Facebook’s Pages Terms has a full list of what you as a business owner needs to abide by in using Facebook Pages, as I am only focusing on the Facebook image sizes and designs to keep you out of trouble here.

Now for the App Tab Areas
These are the 4 boxes displayed directly under your cover page image and the Facebook image sizes are: 111px wide x 74px high. These images can promote your Events, Email Optin Offer, Video Tips, Blog Articles and other social site presences you may want to advertise. These are a great way to be creative as the linkable text below can be customised as much as the image itself. There is also a huge number of free apps that you can use to simplify the process and two of my faves that help me build traffic to my website are the ones which connect Pinterest to display my Pins in my Page and an excerpt of my blog articles with an image. Ensure you use a blog app that links directly to your articles in your website and not into the Apps website where they pull your article in. This does them wonders for their website traffic, but nothing for you – Network Blogs is one of these that I avoid.

Posted Images
It is important to understand the advertising rules behind these if you plan to use them as Promotional or Sponsored posts. The most common reason people’s images are not accepted as an advertisement by Facebook is because it does not abide by the 20% text contribution rule. It’s always difficult to determine what is 20% of an image space so I have created an infograph giving you some idea of the possibilities. This includes sponsored advertisements which image size is: 194px wide x 139px high.

The Facebook image size that best fits in your Facebook Timeline wall can be seen here with an example of what 20% of text might be if you plan to turn it into a promotional post. If you upload an image and the text isn’t on display Facebook has a handy little repositioning tool you can find by clicking the pencil in the top right of the post.

Another Facebook image size you might use less infrequently is the Milestone Facebook image, which is: 843px wide x 403px high and a great way to promote a workplace achievement or award. This is often used to make an announcement style image and then click on the star in the top right to ‘feature’ the image at it’s full width. Just remember, using this technique will only appear attractive on your page and not in your likers and friends home news feeds.

Pinterest has been found to be one of the best traffic referrers of all social sites for many business users who have already created a Pinterest presence. So I thought I’d share 12 Pinterest tips for business users who have already created a presence and want to gain more marketing from it.

In case you have been living under a ‘cyber world rock’ Pinterest is a virtual cork board where you organise and pin your stuff into sorted categories. Much like how you would keep your bills under one magnet on the fridge, the kids certificates under another, and event invitations under yet another. Pinterest is the same concept with a social networking twist that allows others to follow your ‘pin boards’ that interest them so they are notified when you pin something new. Pinterest is a great method of advertising for businesses with products or services because of this.

Adding images to pin boards not only shares the news with the already targeted audience happy to follow but also creates an opportunity for traffic to be led back to a business’ website for further information. Tracking the following, repining and like activity means also businesses will be able to understand what people like to engage more with. So for a business owner this can be a valuable marketing feedback resource also.

Here is my 12 Pinterest Tips for Business Users to help you improve your activity further:

1. Brand Your Business
Use your business name for the profile URL before someone else does. If it is a Pinterest business profile use your business name as your Pinterest profile title also. Otherwise if it is your personal Pinterest account add your business in the “About” section. This area is like the bio area on Twitter and should be short but provide a good description of what you or your business is about. Make sure you add your website link and connect your Facebook and Twitter social accounts so they all display underneath the about section and people can be led to follow you on other platforms.

2. Build Boards On Your Industry Niche Topic
Just like sharing information on your other social networks keep it relevant to what you want to be known for. Create boards of interest on topics within your industry niche so you attract a target audience to follow you. Pin images of your products and services amongst the relevant created boards.

3. Add Pins to Boards
It is important your Pinterest boards look visually appealing and active so start with 8 boards and add at least 9 pins to each because this is what people will immediately see when they look at your Pinterest Profile. Rather than leave boards empty make them private until you have a few pins on them.

4. Enhance Images
Images that get a lot of attention are generally very visually appealing and tend to shift an emotion in the viewer. Use quotes by famous people within images to reinforce or ‘endorse’ your business’ service. Add ‘call to action’ text to promotional images in order to encourage ‘repines’ or ‘likes’

5. Add a Simple Description
Do not miss the opportunity to use keywords you want to be found for. Create a simple description for all your Pinterest images and use keywords that people may search for when looking for topical information.

6. Pin Videos
Not many people know they can pin YouTube video as well as images and this is a great opportunity for you to increase the views of your Channel’s videos. Using video is a very engaging way to share information about products and services so consider ‘how to’ tips and ‘testimonials’. The quickest way to share your videos is by adding the Pin It Button to your browser for use.

7. Do NOT use shorten URL links
Many businesses think the best way to track their social activity is to sign up to a shortening URL service like Bit.ly. Consider using another method such as Pinerly or Pingraphy. If you shorten URL’s you are creating redirects which unfortunately is not information Google can track. This means if you are wanting your website to increase in rankings for certain topics then you are reducing the chances of being considered a relevant source by Google, therefore your website links are less likely to be listed in Google searches. If your website has Google Analytics then you will be able to track what traffic comes from not only Pinterest but Facebook as well without shortening the URL. To read more about the array of supportive resources there are for Pinterest read http://socialmediababe.com/pinterest-marketing-tools.

8. Add the URL link in the Description
By adding the URL link at the beginning of the description or as a ‘call to action’ at the end will increase the click through of traffic. Eg Go to http://….. for more information.

9. Add Hashtags (#) in Descriptions
If you are familiar with hashtag searches in Twitter you will understand how to use this effectively in Pinterest also. Think of the keywords relevant to your topic that you would like to be found in searches for and add a # with no spaces before it. For example, if you want your pins to be found under the keyword ‘mortgage’, use #mortgage in your description. This makes it easier for new followers to find you. More followers = more traffic to your website.

10. Engage with Other Pins
Because it is a social network it works successfully when it is a two way conversation. So if you expect people to follow you and repine your images then take a little time to do a few searches and find images on other people’s boards to like, repine or comment on. The other people involved will be notified of your activity and may reciprocate. Be strategic about your activity eg; who’s images you repine, what size of their following may see it if you leave a comment, is it an image with a lot of engagement already.

11. Use the @ to Mention Others
Again this tool acts in the same way as it does in Twitter and Facebook. In order to mention someone who is following you in your descriptions or comments type the @ symbol before typing their name. As you start to type a drop down of name choices will appear for you to select them from. Both these last points are a very effective method to gain the attention of your followers as notifications with links back to the activity is emailed to them.

12. Add the Pinterest Mobile App
If you are a business person not necessarily in front of a computer all the time then this will be a huge benefit to you. Not only does it allow you to browse, pin, repin but consider taking social networking photos and uploading them to give you the opportunity to mention other people and have your pins seen by their followers too. The quickest way to download this free resource is to search for ‘pinterest app’ once you have logged into your App Store on you phone. Using the Pinterest Mobile App is one of the best ways to socially interact regularly on Pinterest which means keeping your profile active with ease.

Social media has well and truly established itself as a necessary online marketing tool to grow your business brand and traffic to your website. For those of you who are yet to adopt using social media strategies as a part of your marketing efforts it can feel daunting which social site is best for business. Over the years of social sites evolving their has been many come and go, which can make the decision of where to invest your time to understand how to use them that much harder. But there is a few that are consistently adapting to stay leaders amongst the online social networks which should form part of your core brand presence. They are Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google+ and more recently Pinterest.

I am hearing you sigh and thinking “when’s it going to pass?” I’m afraid to tell you it isn’t. Especially given Google owns two of them and uses them to assist in providing us all with the most relevant search results possible. If anything, social sites are only going to become even more sophisticated and niched within industries, but these five I believe are here to stay.

Now, just because your business should be on these five social platforms doesn’t mean if you are new to social media marketing to jump in and use all of them actively at once. Each one has a different level of social etiquette that is acceptable and the time in learning from being an observer is worth taking in order not to create the wrong reputation about your business. Initially, just claim your url’s, fill out the about areas and schedule time to update them at least once a week while you focus your strength on understanding 1 or 2.

To help you educate yourself on a little about what each of these social networks do and the language they use I found this infograph by Purolator that also shares a few tips on getting started.

My ongoing frustration with the inability to reach fans who actively want to follow me on Facebook has had me investigating Google+ even more in the last 6 months. I know it is important to ensure just because I like one space doesn’t mean my audience does and in general my largest audience is in Facebook (even though I love LinkedIn the most probably). But quantity does not equal quality and my Facebook vs Google analytics is telling me there is more interaction with my website coming from Google+ and Google searches than Facebook.

Not only is there more interaction with my website coming from the traffic generated from Google but it is also more productive in time for me to focus on building this source. This is because Google actually notifies everyone who follows me. They even allow me to email them my posts if I wish to (this is a feature I also love about LinkedIn). This notification doesn’t get buried or die after a day or two either – unlike relying on people to log into Facebook to even see notifications, Google has it ready for when the person next opens their gmail – it’s the bright red count in the top right hand corner… nice right!

So if I have a 1/3 of the network in Google that I do in Facebook reading and potentially interacting socially with my website content and only have to spend a third of the time to get that engagement for free why would I bang my head against a wall and waste quality time keeping posts active in Facebook three times a day so something is in the news feed of my likers in hope of them interacting with it???

If I’ve lost you a little then let me break it down why I’m raving: Google ranks what is relevant for searched keywords (this is why we blog). But they also take into account the number of social signals attached to that article or the contributing author (this would be the associated likes, +1′s, tweets etc on my personal and business social profiles including Google+ with my website and articles). The more social interaction, the more relevance Google gives the content in keyword searches. So it is a no brainer to focus on the social sites that give me the best return in engagement in order to increase my article rankings because this works for me over the long term.

And if you are still a little confused about the Facebook vs Google debate then perhaps hearing it from Guy Kawasaki will help you understand why Google+ is something to start focusing on if you haven’t been.

It is important to continually review your social media strategy because you don’t want to waste time and lose the impact you can have with your target audience especially when social sites are continually evolving and changing the rules. You should expect to be adaptable in your marketing approach as often as they change.

To understand more about what Google+ really is and how you can benefit from it read an earlier article I wrote on the importance of Google Plus for Business.

I had hoped Facebook Graph Search was going to be a feature when the Timeline was released because searching Facebook for information has been one of the biggest issues I hear people complain about most. But now it is here and creating a lot of buzz!

So what does it mean? Why are people excited and at the same time concerned? And the big question…
Why are sources saying it will be interesting how it affects Google+ and future searching habits?

First watch this brief ABC news report about what Facebook Graph Search is and what it means to you as a Facebook user (I think it’s the first time I’ve seen Mark Zuckerberg do a launch with such gusto!)

I love the idea of being able to use a search engine which prioritises what my connections recommend rather than what content gains a lot of traffic like other search engines. This is like asking all my friends where is the best place to stay in Phuket to go on a holiday and getting all their recommendations (if they’ve been there – so legit) sent back to me – instantly!

Although Google does acknowledge social shares of web content as part of their ranking strategy it is not solely based on your connections – the Google +1 was supposed to support that. But in my experience, not as many people have adopted using it as frequently as the ‘Like’. Also the type of content we are so willing to share in Facebook is generally of a more personal nature than what we are sharing in Google+ if we do use it. My opinion, and it’s not the first time I’ve said this, is Google needs to spend a little PR money on really marketing what it is they really created Google+ for because I believe more businesses would use it if they knew the long term benefits of contributing to it.

So, because Facebook has been collecting your ‘personal preferences and activities it is going to be a more personal search. We trust people’s opinions and recommendations more than direct advertising or strangers opinions and this is going to become a powerful social media marketing tool if businesses think about how they can integrate it into their current marketing strategies – offline and online!

This brings me to another topic I love to talk about and that is how important it is to set up your Facebook Profile properly in order to promote your business. This doesn’t mean open it up to the public or even share posts that are business related. It means displaying certain information in your ‘About’ area publicly in order for Facebook to share it – such as your Facebook Business Page, your website etc.

It also means being very aware of what you are sharing with ‘friends’ and ‘followers’, so using other Facebook features such as creating Facebook lists is a great way to keep what you are sharing organised. Using the Facebook ‘View As’ tool which allows you to see all your profile from another’s eyes is a good feature to use after making changes.

Facebook allows you to customise your Privacy Settings right down to individual posts and photos and I highly recommend if you plan to continue using Facebook for a personal purpose too, you think about what you want coming up in the Facebook Graph Search when your friend’s use it. Changing the settings to display the content to ‘only me’ is the best option if you don’t want it in Facebook’s searches for anyone.

Personally, I’m excited to finally see this feature released and if you are like me and would like to be one of the first to dabble with it when it is released then click here to receive your invite. Watch the Facebook marketing videos here which explain the Facebook Graph Search further and then come back and tell me what you think

In the meantime, I am now busy scheduling small group consultation workshops in Sydney and Melbourne for my clients and followers who want my advice and to go through their Profile settings with them together. If this interests you add your deets to my contact form, making sure you share what city you are in and the email to send you the booking form.

Using your Facebook Profile for business has never been so easy since Facebook made certain features more visible to users. There’s a lot of reasons why you should understand how to use the Facebook profile more strategically, but here is a few key ones, especially if you don’t connect with anyone outside of friends and family but do use a Facebook Page for business.

The first feature you should know about is the ‘Follow’ button – it used to be called the ‘Subscriber’ button. This is so people can follow your posts but not necessarily connect with you as a friend. If you are like me and using your Facebook profile for business networking then you should have the ‘Follow’ button set to display on your profile. Then share some posts publicly (or select the default to public). In the status bar under your post you can select to change who sees individual posts.

Depending on which way you decide to set the default privacy settings of your posts you should have some profile areas customised, such as who can view your Page likes or friends etc. Even if you completely close your posts to the public but have a business Page, you should at least display the ‘work at’ link publicly so people can connect with you on your Facebook Business Page. This is when the ‘View As’ tool comes in handy. It is a great way to check if your settings are correct in terms of what you want to display publicly or to a certain friend list.

Just as much as there is areas I make sure are publicly displayed there is also certain aspects I set to display to ‘only me’. Just like in LinkedIn I believe my friends list or Page like list is for my eyes only – not for snoops to harvest or sticky beak at. It also means I control any related activity being shared in the Facebook ticker or news feeds of my friends, such as who I just became friends with, what pages I like or keywords I just searched (yes searched!).

To check your settings to see what others see in the ticker or news feed use your Activity Log and edit any by clicking on the pencil.

To customise what is on view in your Profile by default click on the ‘About’ area of your Profile and then the “Edit” buttons next to the relevant fields you want to customise.

To change your default settings and control the activity your connections see in their news feeds and ticker customise your ‘Privacy Settings’ by clicking on the little cog wheel in the top right.

Another Facebook tool worth knowing how to use well is the Update Status Bar. The icons along the top help you select what kind of update it is and each gives you varied features to enhance your post’s interaction. Along the bottom are icons to add people or location names and back date a post for a past event if required. The timing of posts is very handy if you haven’t had time to share holidays while away. This feature on a Facebook Page allows you to schedule posts 6 months ahead and is a very handy time saving tool for those managing work and marketing.

The next feature allows you to select who you share the status update with. Most people set their default posts to only share with friends and never tend to change it. But, I recommend you customise some of your posts that could be shared with the public – especially if they are business related announcements, otherwise you are missing out feeding information to build trust when other business people search to find you. The best marketing tool around is word of mouth and referrals from people who already know you so leverage off this, especially if you are inclined to using your Facebook Profile for connecting with family and friends only.

Facebook already creates default lists but you can also create custom lists to cater for your own networking purposes. I find lists are good to separate friends from business connections or clients because at times you may only want to share certain posts or photos with certain lists.

Using your Facebook Profile for business as well as your Page increases the success of engagement and interaction you can create around your posts and is naturally more closer to how we all do business offline. I mean we don’t socialise at dinner where there are new people and only talk to those we know. We expand our social network and share information in order to find something in common to talk about. Quite often this can lead to some sort of exchange of contact information. By using a few custom settings and the same level of social interaction you can put your Facebook Profile to work for you 24-7!

According to Google the real winners from the increase of smart phone users are businesses who have mobile friendly websites. The biggest winners to gain more business from a mobile friendly website are ‘urgent service’ based businesses but quite often these businesses do not have one.

Google’s recent Mobile Ads blog released results which warned businesses that:
★ 61% of mobile searches leave a site if it is not mobile friendly to find an easier or quicker solution and
★ 52% of users are less likely to engage with a business after a bad mobile website experience.
Typically bad mobile friendly websites or experiences would be:
★ the whole website or images or video not loading because of the use of flash
★ loading speed of website or pages due to amount of information or size of image files
★ content too small to read
★ screen size of content too large
★ links unresponsive (such as contact forms or phone numbers)

The survey was done by Sterling Research and Smith Geiger and not surprisingly they also found
★ 67% of mobile users are more likely to buy after finding what they were looking from a mobile search as well as
★ 74% of people are more likely to return in the future or refer friends to a mobile friendly website.

So not only does a mobile friendly website give you the edge over your competitors but it is more likely to turn users into customers. With the rise of users on smart phones means this type of search activity is only going to increase. Not only is it more convenient than taking notes and searching later on a computer, but feeds our growing attitude to plan our activity spontaneously rather than planning ahead.

From this evidence, the biggest winners who are set to receive more business from a mobile friendly website is the product and service delivery businesses. This is because of our consumer need to be satisfied quickly – whether it be in finding and ordering a pizza to calling a mechanic or doctor. Unfortunately, the very businesses that are set to make the greatest gains from having a mobile friendly website are generally the businesses barely functioning on a properly established website. With changes the question might be ‘should these industries be more focused on the functions of a mobile friendly website first?’

But overall, because of the increase of smart phones it will be critical for strong brands who are interested in nurturing their customer relationships to ensure they have a mobile friendly website for them to use – otherwise customers will search and use their competitor’s mobile friendly website instead!

If you are using your Facebook Profile for business networking and not just social activity then using the Facebook Profile Follow button is a very handy tool and should be switched on. This is so people who do not know you are able to see your public posts in their news feed.

Unlike Twitter, where it is more accepted to connect with people you may not know, Facebook has always been to most a more personal and private social space. Using the profile follow button means you can continue to only connect with people in your ‘inner circle’ – those you actually know or have met – but allow people who are interested in networking with you for business purposes to be connected to what you choose to share publicly.

If you are using your Facebook Profile for business then essentially you should be sharing any relevant business content with the public. This doesn’t mean you have to spam your friends with business promotions every week. Just select under your post, in the status bar to share any posts that are fine to display publicly. Your reason for doing this is simple – the business contacts you select to ‘friend’ may recommend or refer business to you by tagging your profile name elsewhere in Facebook. This creates a link back to you for any new potential business to investigate who you are, if you are someone they would trust to do business with. If you have nothing on display, then you’re missing out on this new business opportunity. To read more about sharing specific Facebook posts and creating custom friend lists click the link.

If you are not sure if you are already using the Facebook Profile Follow button then you can use the ‘View As’ tool to see your Profile Page as the public sees it. if you are under 18 years of age you cannot allow people to follow because you cannot share public posts yet.

Step 1

Step 2

To switch on the Facebook Profile Follow button or change the settings follow these steps:
1. Click on the cog wheel icon in the top right hand corner.
2. When it expands, click on the ‘Activity Settings’ link.
3. A new page will display with a left side bar.
4. Scroll down and click on “Followers”.

5. Select to allow followers by ticking the box.
6. Select who can comment on your profile posts (I only allow those who are connected to me as friends do comment on my Profile to encourage anyone else following me to interact with me on my business Page).

7. Select whether you want to receive a Facebook notification when a person starts to follow your public posts or not. This will be a personal choice and may be affected by your general notifications settings. You can check and make changes to your Facebook Notifications by selecting it in the left hand side bar.

After you have completed these steps click on your Profile. You should now see a Followers Box on display on your profile and the ‘Follow’ button if you view your profile as public.

You will see this number rise as people view you and click on the follow button on your profile. The number will also rise when you reject friend requests from people you don’t wish to connect with. This means these people can receive your public posts in their news feed without you being friends.

A glitch I discovered by clicking on the ‘Followers’ Box was anybody could see the whole list of my connected network – my followers and my friends. Even though I had customised my friends list so people could only see who they were mutually already connected with I discovered that by clicking on the ‘friends follow list’ it displayed ALL my friends to anybody – not just the mutual friends in common. The next step is very important if you want to restrict who can view your network and avoid anyone using your list as a quick way to build their own.

1. Click on the Followers box.
2. In the top right, click on ‘Edit’.
3. Select who you are comfortable sharing your network with.

Personally I think it is no one’s business who I am friends with or who is following me other than myself. So I select ‘Only Me’. The followers box will only be on view to who you have selected to see it. This will make no change to the appearance of the ‘Follow’ button. You can use the ‘View As’ feature to check how this appears to others.

If you would like to restrict who sees the ‘Follow’ button on your profile to ‘friends of friends’ and not just have anyone following your posts then this extra feature is also in this area. If you allow anyone to send you a friend request and not just ‘friends of friends’ then this will change that Activity setting also.
